In 1917 in Munich there is a plant of aviation Bayerische Motoren Werke engines ("The Bavarian motor plants") — BMW, this date is considered BMW basis, and by Carla Rappa and Gustava Otto her founders.
After coming into effect of the Versailles contract, right after the end of World War I, to Germans forbade to make engines for planes, and the firm appeared on the verge of bankruptcy. However Carla Rappa and Gustav Otto, it didn't confuse, and they decided to reorientate plant to release of engines for motorcycles.
In 1923 from the conveyor of BMW plant released the R32 motorcycle. In 1923 in Paris this motorcycle made furor and won reputation of the reliable and high-speed motorcycle, having beaten a huge number of records on speed.
1924 development of the Motor-4 engine begins, exactly thanks to this engine Franz Dimer by plane rose by height of 9760 meters and set a world record. In the thirties between BMW and the Soviet Union the confidential agreement on delivery of aircraft engines thanks to which the Soviet pilots established a huge number of world records was concluded.
In 1928 BMW buys automobile works in Eisenach (Thuringia), and begins production of the Dixi car.
During World War II of BMW was one of the most dynamically developing firms. Wolfgang von Gronau crossed Northern Atlantic from the East to the west by plane of the company BMW, Ernst of Henne on the motorcycle sets a world record of 279,5 km/h. In 1933 BMW releases the first 6-cylinder engine, with a first-ever lattice for a radiator – called then BMW "nostrils". In 1936 BMW lets out the best-known 328 model. For those times, it simply was the car from the future: the six-cylinder engine, a tubular frame, new system of the valvate mechanism with bars. This car laid the foundation for reliability, quality and beauty of BMW vehicles.
In 1938 BMW creates the fastest model of the motorcycle with a power of 60 h.p. and with a maximum speed of 210 km/h. Exactly thanks to this model George Mayer becomes the champion of Europe.
The end of World War II turned back accident for BMW, four plants were completely destroyed, having appeared in an occupation zone. Karl Rapp and Gustav Otto, make the decision again to start everything from scratch. In 1951 there is the first post-war car of the 501 model. However it doesn't bring financial success. In 1955 the decision on release of two models of the R 50 and R 51 motorcycles is made.
The third time the firm begins all over again. In 1956 — Albrecht Graff Gertz helps to create Carla Rappe and Gustava Otto the sports BMW 507 car. The car accelerated to 220 km/h thanks to the engine 3.2 liters and 150 h.p. At the moment it is one of the most rare collection cars.
In 1969 BMW begins production of cars in Berlin. In 1989 the plant releases about 37 thousand motorcycles and presents to public new model of the K1 motorcycle.
In 1970 there are most popular models of the BMW series – the 3rd series, the 5th series, the 6th series, the 7th series. With an exit of these BMW cars I occupied a segment of comfortable sedans.
In the 90th there is a dream compartment of BMW 850i – the twenty-cylinder engine, became heart of this car.
Purchase in 1994 of industrial group ("the Rover of Groups") became very successful step for the company.
In 1996 the BMW Z3 7th model became the most popular thanks to its advertizing in the movie with the superspy 007 James Bond. The plant didn't manage to carry out orders.
Now BMW, makes the masterpieces at five plants in Germany and twenty two enterprises scattered worldwide. All assembly on conveyors is made manually, only computer diagnostics at the exit checks cars.
